HISTORY

The Excelsior building was established in 1881.  Designed by one of New Zealand's foremost architects of the 19th Century (W.B. Armson), the building is now classified as 'historic'.  It is protected by The Historic Places Trust from demolition or unsympathetic alteration.

The New Excelsior Backpackers opened its doors to customers in May 98 after a major refurbishment.
